The son of Polish and Ukrainian immigrants who came to America the right way, Stefan Mychajliw was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. The youngest of seven children, Stefan’s father worked as a typewriter repairman and his mother as a factory worker. These blue-collar beginnings have molded his life ever since.
From these humble beginnings, Stefan has achieved the American dream. Serving as Erie County Comptroller — “Taxpayers’ Independent Watchdog” — he has fought for a strong fiscal conservative agenda while holding career politicians and bureaucrats accountable.
To lead by example Stefan’s first hard-hitting review was of his own department: the Office of Erie County Comptroller. The top-to-bottom review revealed troubling inefficiencies. Numerous reforms were implemented to clean up the department, and a CPA was hired to lead the Audit Division for the first time since 1986.
Prior to serving in public office, Stefan spent a career fighting for taxpayers through his hard-hitting investigative journalism. His work rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse led to good government reforms that better served taxpayers.
Stefan and his wife, Ashley, a social worker, make their home in the Village of Hamburg. He is the proud father of Mia Theresa Mychajliw, 14, Maksym Roman Mychajliw, 2, and Emeryk Francis Mychajliw, born July 2019.
Very involved with Infant of Prague Roman Catholic Church in Cheektowaga, Stefan is a Church Lector and bingo caller. He is also active in Collins Christian Ministries and Keryx Prison Ministries at Collins and Gowanda Correctional Facilities.
